...USS Chicago, USS Portland(with LIFE photographer Bob Landry aboard), USS Astoria, and USS Minneapolis(with 20th Century Fox film crew aboard)left Pearl Harbor early in the morning.
Just as the ships got out of the harbor entrance, Bob Landry would take this photograph (the 1st of over 200 photographs during this trip).
Shortly after this photograph was taken, the ships started to zig-zag. That is when the 20th Century Fox film crew aboard Minneapolis started to film the ships for their upcoming movie "To The Shores of Tripoli".
I wonder how Bob Landry and the crew of 20th Century Fox felt about missing a massive opportunity to film a certain event that would take place 2 days later at Pearl.
