Pretending what? You told me I have a poor understanding of the various rules of war. I don't know what I don't know, Phil. It's obvious to you because your understanding is better. I am as clueless as you say. I could then use--and would appreciate--a better understanding. I glanced over some stuff on the IHL after you posted. An instructor to assist with making heads or tails of all that would be wonderful. It's pretty vast.
I am always up for an education. Please feel free to make my understanding better. I am curious to know more.

You (and in general the USA) have a very poor understanding of the various rules of war, and international law, and how they changed.
Likewise, the UN Charter and other post-WW2 international laws were mostly written by the USA/UK based on their experience and lessons from WW2.
The USA, in general, moans about those restrictions nowadays because they have "forgotten" the reason for those laws, and who wrote them. (The UK has similar, but different problems with their memory.)
