We cannot absorb a production and shipping material cost increase of 60% without having to raise prices to match.
There are already alternatives to these PRC made products, specifically Phrozen (Taiwan) and Peopoly (South Korea). The only reason they are not more widely used is because of the lower prices that the PRC companies can sell at. I use Elegoo printers, which may or may not be affected since they have, at present, a good supply of stock in the country already. Also, since I'm using older printers, parts are fairly easy to get on the aftermarket market. The only two consumables in the printer are the monochrome LCD print screen (everyone already has one of these in their cell phone) and the polyeurothane FEP screen for the print tank, which we already make here in the form of musical drum heads. Resin may become an issue, but I'm sure some enterprising resin company in the US (Smooth-On, Glenmarc, Alumilite) may begin to look at making UV resin here if the profit margins with the tariffs makes it feasible. Also, if these tariffs go into place, I'm almost positive a company like Formlabs (or maybe Elegoo or Anycubic) will develop a domestic production chain to manufacture their products here. There are already a LOT of MSLA printers here in the US, so even a domestic source of replacement parts could become a feasible business model. Remember, the Trump 45 tariffs are still in place today.
Point is this. Say 60% tariffs do go into place. The market itself is dynamic, and we are not dealing with anything unique to one country. There will be people that take advantage of this, and create a new supply chain, albeit a little more expensive, and things will return to abnormal in the 3D printing arena quickly. As long as the inflationary policies are done away with, the market itself will adjust naturally. Naturally, prices will rise, but not to the extent some people are fantacizing about.
Now, as to complete injection molded model kits (Trumpeter...), you drop a 60% increase on them, I'll have a wet dream about that...
