I used to have a general survey of WWI naval battles. In it was a photo of Iron Duke right after she arrived in Scapa after the mobilization prior to the UK war declaration. She is clearly in the middle of a repaint with the very dark gray used in the fleet review in July which contrasted with the new light gray. The book was lost after a move, and I have never seen this photo anywhere in any source (IWM, books, etc.).The photo is an absolute gem! There are other battleships visible, and they are in the middle of repaints, too. Some had disruptive painting such as dark lines on masts, etc. This photo proves beyond doubt the highly advanced Royal Navy was already experimenting with camouflage at a very early stage!
Has anybody seen this photo? I would like to recover it for my records.
