Good to know, thanks. I had always thought that forward structure was added directly during the rebuilding. Navsource photos do show it not appearing until about 1985, though.
I think a lot of the confusion comes from inspecific descriptions of her rebuilding which just say things like, "She was rebuilt as a command ship." Again, from Navsource, it all becomes a little clearer, now that you have provided this info.

is an article about "a better Belknap coming back." The very last page of that article mentions command facilities added AFT, with mention of groundwork for future command capability. So, she was actually "rebuilt as a command ship," but not immediately with that forward structure. That came a few years further along with selection to be the Sixth Fleet command ship. If the photo of her with it was taken "sometime in 1985," as captioned, while just above it are 1983 dated photos of her without it, then it looks to have been installed in 1984.

Belknap herself was involved in a serious collision with the USS John F. Kennedy CV, which destroyed most of her superstructure. When it was rebuilt, that structure you see was added. It was for extra command staff. The rest of the class did not get it. So, photos you see of Belknap with it are post-collision, while the photos you see of her without it are pre-collision.
Correct, sort of, after the collision of 1975, Belknap was towed to the Philadelphia navy yard. She was completed in 1980 back to the original design with some updates. However, in the late 80s, she was converted to a Command Cruiser (Flagship) for the Med. Superstructure was added on the upper level for command facilities. Previous Message
Hi everyone, I have had great advice from fellow ship modelers on this site about CG-16, CG-26, CGN-25 and CGN-35 rudder for scratch-building full hull 1/700 out of EV, JAG and Ironshipwright waterline kits. The CG-16 is completed and now I am working on USS Belknap. I noticed some pictures shown a structure was added between the bridge and fwd missile reload housing. Is this the final config. of this ship (some photo shown the ship without this extra structure)? Your inputs are greatly appreciated.
