So they were flush with the surrounding planked deck?
Adding information for context. They show up "Bolt Plates" on page 8 of Arizona's Booklet of General Plans , which is probably why Revell depicted them as metal plates in their model (which carried forward to the Tom's Modelworks and Trumpeter 1/350 kits). As has been stated, they were covered in planking as this area was used to store boats and plans on rolling cradles, so a raised patch would not work.
The special deck planking and margin planks can be seen in photos on pages 168-169 of Paul Stillwell's Arizona book, if you have access to a copy.

They are removable sections to access the turbines down in her engineering spaces. They were wood planked but the elongated octagonal outline is noticeable.
Just forward of the Number 3 turret on both P & S are two large areas. Can anyone tell me what they are? Are they wooden deck or metal.
