The first thing I noticed was that the caissons/islands were completely inadequate to resist collision from a big ship. I remember the massive concrete caissons/islands for the1936 San Francisco Bay Bridge. They would have crumpled the bow of any ship of the day, and probably still were effective when the bridge was torn down.
