In short, the 3D printed models on Shapeways are either totally inferior and/or are far more expensive than most other 3D printed ship models, so they are not a fair test of what 3D printed models represent.
Perhaps you might want to start with SS Models 3D printed subs (Gato and Salmon Class) as they are even less expensive than the $27 Shapeways horrible (IMHO) Bernegat. The full hull version is only about $10.
I have purchased about 8 1/700 waterline kits from SS Models at prices ranging from $54 to $90 (cruisers to battleships) and they are not without real challenges and outright problems. Warping is one, sanding off the remains of the resin supports is another but the biggest problem is that the parts designer likely has never built and painted warship models. Too many layers of superstructure decks are printed on top of each other such that it is impossible to paint the decks. Or the decks have so much detail that unless you are the most highly skilled builder (top 1%) you will mess up, or at least I will.
Take a look at this and see if you think you can paint the deck without slathering everything else:

Here is one that SS Models has done a better of separating the various decks but not those higher up in the superstructure. And, of course, the Fargo was not a 1941 warship and she was not commissioned until four months after the end of WWII.

The seller (lixili2016 ) appears to be an owner of SS Models and he has been good in responding when there have been problems with my many purchases.
But don't take any of this as a slam against SS Models as their 3D printing is pretty amazing (my eyes limit my use of PE) and improving, and their prices are reasonable, which is something I can't say about Shapeways even though there are some excellent designers whose products can be found on Shapeways.
Well, I'm trying a "printed" ship model. I'll admit, some of the CAD renderings scared me at first, but some research & some questions, and I've ordered a 1/700 Barnegat-class Seaplane Tender off of Shapeways. I didn't mess with any of the upcharges so looking at mid-late January
We will see.
