Following a brilliant campaign of maneuver in which Union General William Rosecran's Army of the Cumberland ran the Confederate army out of eastern and middle Tennessee, he blundered moving his command and left it wide open to an assault by James Longstreet of the Army of Northern Virginia. Loyal Virginian General George Thomas pieced together a defensive line that saved the balance of the Army of the Cumberland. earning the nickname 'The Rock of Chickamauga.'
Chickamauga was the most sanguinary battle of the War in the West.
