Doing the NS Savannah requires "green" decks. The nature of the structures says paint the green and mask to paint the rest. The green gets on surfaces to be painted white. So should I first paint the "to be white" surfaces say some light grey to improve the "whiteness" of the final coat or can I just spray paint away? Opinions and experiences sought.

Just a guess, but it could be a matter of technique, rather than priming. Aim the brush, or airbrush off the subject, in this case a deck, and the overspray will be away from the model. It's the same thing with masking. If the stream is toward the mask, the paint gets shoved under the tape and creates an irregular separation. If the stream is off the ape, you get a better result. Try it on a filing card and observe the difference. By the way, always use fresh masking. If it's old, the tape adhesive can create both paint and lifting problems. Hope this information is useful.
