Re: Forrest Sherman Destroyer Information
Did the Shermans have 600 or 1200 pound steam plants? USN standardized on 1200 lb, so that may have been a factor. I think the all gun armament also caused early retirement. The steam powered Addams and Coontz classes, all with AA missile systems, all lasted into the 1990s.
I'm assembling that Atlantis 1/3X0 Forrest Sherman kit. It's worth all of $20.
The wikipedia page says the Forrest Shermans were all retired from the USN in the early to mid-80. No real mention of how the sailors felt about the ships. The upgrades to the ASW was fair as was the conversion to DDGs. However, the ships used steam plants and that may have been why none survived in service past 1988.
Anybody know of books - asides from Dr. Friedman - on the subject? Thanks.
