Cool topic !! I used to go grocery shopping with my Mother when I was a kid. After going to Acme ? There was a Clover Dept. Store right next to Acme. Every now & again, she'd hit Clover for something she couldn't find in Acme. Me ? Like any kid, like A DART to the toy dept. I eyed up that Revell TITANIC for quite some time & asking for it. I remember two responses: we don't have the money for it or maybe another time....
This went one for a bit- me asking & being put off.
Finally, one day I just grabbed it & took it to her and said, "see how cool the TITANIC is ? It's a great ship model !!....
She finally looked at me & said these exact words- "if I buy that for you, are you really going to build it ?" Oh, heavens to Betsy, YES !! I was 8 then. Here I am 46 years later....
I still recant that day with Mom, she's 84 now.
Little did she know what she'd triggered in me that day in 1975/'76.....
And I still love to go grocery shopping too, btw. Although, elections have consequences & I nearly wanna cry at the damnned prices anymore....
It was nice to go back down memory lane again, so thank you !!!

My first model kit was the 1/570 Revell Titanic, gifted to me during Christmas 1992 at age 8. My older brother was gifted the Revell 1/530 USS Lexington at the same time. I have both kits to this day in a box, mostly intact.
I would go to my local hobby shop as often as my parents would take me and I spent my allowance money on models and supplies there.
One kit stands out most in my memory, the Airfix 1/600 King George V. After building so many Revell kits, this kit stands out most, with the Airfix 1/600 Repulse next. They just seemed so much more detailed. The Revell 1/570 North Carolina was the first kit I built on my own, and it is special to me as well.
