Fascinating! History is like the news - events that are prevented because of behind-the-scenes measures are rarely reported. A blind spot in human perception and evaluation.
Thx for posting!
I came across this many years ago in an NID file, which I found again by accident and I thought that it might be interesting for some.
Apparently, the use of tactical radio deception was a prime reason for the success of many of these convoys. What follows is a quote from an intelligence file for RA 61.
" Promted by a certain amount of phoney W/T designed deliberately as a ruse by C in C H.F. the enemy was led into chasing and, according to U boats, 'intercepting' more than one ghost convoy. In one case in October 1944 this ghost was followed for days with all the procedure of a full convoy operation by a total 19 U. boats until the ghost finally eluded the U. boats".
RA 61 made port safely.
This aspect of naval history is VERY rarely mentioned in commercial histories.
