I made no direct comparison; I simply stated both groups belong in the same dustbin of history. While I haven't seen 'Cold Mountain' it appears a look into the history of the era supports the notion that the hunting down of deserters by the South did occur, with varying results...including execution:

Interesting too, whether the United States would have overcome its divisions had JWB not murdered Lincoln in a foolish and successful attempt to alter the course of history.
