Question about the final CO of HMS Repulse

I was curious about the career of Captain William Tennant, who commanded HMS Repulse when she was lost. He was promoted to rear admiral (and subsequently vice admiral postwar), but he never served at sea again. Was this a reflection of the loss of Repulse under his command? Or am I reading too much into a normal career path? The consensus as I understand it was that he handled his ship well during the final battle, and he certainly bore no blame for the decisions that led to the attack.
