No matter what you name or re-name something, a few are going to give a thumbs up, some a thumbs down but the overwhelming majority are going to say 'so what?' Previous Message
Because most of us are not capable of keeping an open mind, and dismiss anything said by anyone else are crap.
At that point in time, the United States of America was a much much different place. The states were indeed United in name, but, most people felt s stronger allegiance to their home state, where they had family and friends. (The fact that the civil war was fought in large by state militias attests to this). This is why most officers from the south went home and fought for their states. They couldn’t pick up arms against family and friends. Were they all pro slavery? In acts and deeds, you could say yes.
Now, I don’t know crap about this Maury guy, other than that attached article. Frankly, I can safely say that will be the extent of my research on him in my life. I don’t know shit about the gal they renamed it for either, other than the fact that she went to Ohio U, which used to be a HELL of a party school. I can say with certainty that I won’t bother looking into her achievements either.(and if anyone wants to try to shame me for these statements, -I don’t care what other people say or do anymore- stuff “political correctness”).
Here is the thing- this wasn’t done as an afront to Maury. It was done to get political support from a very specific gender- look at the article- it mentions it was done on “national women’s day”(no caps on purpose). I don’t know when this came about. I don’t give a crap either way. I honestly think that renaming a ship after this woman isn’t going to garner one vote anywhere for anyone. I don’t think the USNS CEesar Chavez does anything for migrant workers, I don’t think USNS Sacajawea does anyone in the Native American community any great honor, etc etc. Politicians continue to try to curry favor from numerically insubstantial groups. It’s insane to think that voters of a specific group will turn out in numbers for something like this.
But, it was done. I know, and most of you all know, renaming a ship, or a boat, is bad juju.
Sorry for the rant, take it or leave it. No worries either way. To relax a bit this afternoon, I plan on watching my hometown baseball team, the Cleveland India…..wait…. THEY got renamed too??? Get the pitchforks and te tar and feathers!!!
