I would ask around with regard to the wooden decks. They've certainly come a long way since the first iterations but still don't look quite right to me compared to what a talented model builder can do with paint, masking tape, and washes, etc.

Then again, many don't have the desire for that much work or find it intimidating. I can see how something that gets you 75% of the way to what you want is good enough.
