I think the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were very handsome ships, but looked best in the white 'n buff paint scheme.
Scharnhorst had different schemes:
1907-1909: standard two light greys (darker grey at the hull, lighter grey at the superstructure and part of the forecastle)
1909/1910: white hull, yellowish superstructure and part of the forecastle
1910-1914: as in 1907-1909
The planked decks forward and aft were always left unpainted, the superstructure midships was covered with very dark red brown linoleum.
