Douglas was correct. The models used are to toy like. When they explode the entire deck go off the model. Revell models did the same thing. There were better special effects in They Were Expendable.
Kirk Douglas, ex-USN, tried to tell Preminger that the models didn't look right--too high in the water. But no one could tell Preminger anything, ever.
DD 298 that was in PH during the raid and rushes out to sea had a normal size A turret and B turret was hugely oversized. I am guessing that was a prop turret to hide post war armament and provide the 1941 look.
The actual ship is USS Philip (DD-498) and I see that by 1961 B turret was gone.
