Re: USS Barnegat (AVP-10): armament in 1941/42?
I should have noticed this earlier. USS BARNEGAT (AVP-10) and USS BISCAYNE (AVP-11) were both built at the same time at PSNY. Both were laid down, launched, and commissioned on the same dates. They both went to Boston NY. So I decided to look at photos of USS BISCAYNE taken in January and May 1942, for clues. While I was looking at an image from May 1942, of BISCAYNE, I realized that the large crane was replaced by a smaller crane and two 20-mm guns were installed on the deck aft. Major reconstruction occurred prior to the May 1942 photos for these two, the superstructure was altered with many AA weapons installed. These two had one (or two?) quad 1.1-in mounts installed, apparently in that April-May 1942 timeframe.
Long story short, the Niko kit with the large crane, is better suited to represent USS BARNEGAT and BISCAYNE in early 1942 (as seen in the January 1942 images). I still don't think they had 20-mm guns installed in January 1942 (Weekly Overhaul Reports would have mentioned that), with higher priority ships needing the few 20-mm guns available at that time. They "may" have had a few (four?) 20-mm guns installed prior to the rebuild/modifications in April-May 1942, while the large crane was onboard.
Thank you for the detailed reply!
The kit shows her in Measure 1:
According to your arguments - which are convincing - she got 20 mm only in 1942. At this time, she had Measure 12 mod.
Unfortunately, the photo made in mid 1942 is not very high resolution:
