Thanks Nick for the helpful advice. I don't think IHP are ever going to produce a Majestic and there are differences from the Colussus but I have never been able to discover precisely what they are.
Some say the differences are great which means modifications without accurate scale plans probably wouldn't be the best way to go and I have no idea where I would find plans of Sydney 1951 anyway. However, your post is very encouraging that not too much need be done and your range of IHP Lights are very impressive and some have been modified 'out-of-the-box', so I'll have a closer look.
From photos I have seen Sydney has the enclosed bridge but she also had no balcony (for want of the correct word) and both Triumph and Theseus are handy to purchase and so I will probably buy the former, if Sydney doesn't work out I'll be happy enough with a stock kit of an RN Korea vet.
I actually already have the 1/700 air wing of Sea Fury's and Firefly's and one Sikorsky from L'Arsenal, and bofors and photo etch etc are always available.
I don't know how much mod work is needed for the island but I will have to work off photos, like most everything else.
Again thanks for your help.
Hi James and thanks,
The IHP kit is a pretty close match for an early 50`s Sydney, but there are a number of changes to be made.
Off the top of my head you would need to change the position of the openings either side of the ship (situated just in front of the forward boat storage on the model). They will need to be filled and new ones cut between the forward gun sponsons.
The gun director sponsons are different, with higher sides, and later twin 40mm Bofors Mark V (I think) were used for main air defence.
It would be easier to use IHP`s Theseus or Triumph kit as these have the later closed bridge used on Sydney. The island would then have to be further modified for Sydney`s fit.
You should be able to use/modify the stern catwalk from that found on the Toms PE set to match Sydney.
Thatís all the major mods I can think of. Hope this helps.
Very nice and looks to be accurate, please pass on my compliments.
Lars at some stage can you ask Nick how close the IHP kit of Colossus is to a 1951 Majestic. It would be nice to model Sydney during her time in the Yellow Sea.
Nick converted another of IHP Colossus class kits, this time HMAS Sydney as troop transport during the Vietnam War:
HMAS Sydney 1971 (1/700)
