Hi Michael,
I can recommend two LI hobby shops that I have visited and purchased items from.
The closest to Port Jeff is Bayshore Hobbies, located at 2054 Sunrise Hwy South Service Rd, Bay Shore, NY 11706. It has a large selection of plastic models but it is so packed with inventory it could be difficult getting to something on the shelf. Ships are in the back of the store. I don’t recall if they have train related inventory, they might.
The other is Willis Hobbies in Mineola. https://willishobbies.com/
Big on trains and RC cars and planes, but it has a decent plastic kit selection.

I will be visiting Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA, as well as the Newport, RI area soon. Also, I will sail on the ferry from Bridgeport, CT to Port Jefferson, NY on Long Island (I was born in Port Jeff). Are there any hobby shops in the Providence/Newport/Fall River/Port Jeff areas with a decent model kit and HO train selection worth visiting? Same goes for Norwich, CT, where a dear friend of mine grew up.
