Like Michael said, it’s from the points listed. Reason being, when using a chart it’s quicker and easier to just plot the line rather than having to figure out the inverse and then plot it.
If it’s from the ship, that’s when you see “bearing” come to play

Looking through war diaries and I want to make sure I "translate" this right:
"At sea, operating between Point Able, 120° 85 miles from Rennell Island, and Point Baker, 146° 166 miles from Henderson Field, Guadalcanal."
For reference this is Suwannee just before the Battle of Rennell Island during which CA-29 Chicago was lost.
Would these radians be from the ship to the points listed, or their angle from those locations?
