Your preferred method of prepping photo etch ?

I've almost exclusively used fine grit sanding paper & sanded in one direction, versus back n' forth, as to not damage parts. I have the USS LANGLEY CV-1 in my posession (Loose Cannon, 1:700), which is making me re-think my sanding method for this kit.... Enter vinegar. How long to set brass (or stainless) in vinegar to get some "tooth" into the surface ? And how to wash it up afterward ? Is washing after vinegar even neccessary ? Opinions are always greatly appreciated- and have a great weekend, all y'all !! From me all to you all, y'all....🚬😎
