They can't reasonably be expected to know everything. But, in this country, at least, they have some staff, and a large part of being on such a staff is to research things, and write summary reports, etc. And--if they are on any sort of committee--it is expected they do have some level of in-depth knowledge of the subject to hand. (I don't know what capacity she serves in.) So, when they do make these sorts of "wonder blunders," it shows either they did not read any of their staff's efforts, or the staff is clueless, which would not then be "comforting." Idiots advising people who make laws and policy.
"Senator, I looked on some website, and pumpjet subs can only stay submerged for 20 minutes!"

We do have some priceless pollies Down Under. The lady started off running fish and chip shop before going into politics. (That's true, not an April Fools joke) Previous Message
Ooooo! I get the "longer than 20 minutes" joke at the end of the article. Saw the YouTube video of the Aussie politician telling an Australian Admiral that a pumpjet submarine could only stay underwater for 20 minutes. When he told her it was much longer, but the exact time was classified, she told him it wasn't classified. (Whereupon the "speaker," or "chairperson"...whomever controls the floor...then told her she did not get to decide what was and was not classified.) There is a certain amusing "universal quality" to politicians the world over.
Here's the video:

I love the "Collinsons" and pumpjet adaptation for Southern hemisphere operation, not speaking of the planned names.
