was an older fleet boat and remained pretty much in WWII condition when turned over to Japan. There are pictures of her postwar with her 5/25 deck gun still in place.
As a late model Tench
received two Guppy (Greater Underwater Propulsive Power) conversions. She first was modified, streamlined, and received the Portsmouth step sail. Later, she was one of the few Guppy III conversions. With those, the hull was lengthened, a fiberglass “High Atlantic” sail was installed, and three PUFFS fire control sonars (fins) on the deck we’re added. The Guppy III conversions were undertaken as nuclear submarines were taking longer to complete and the loss of Thresher
caused a pause in construction. The last Guppy IIIs were retired in the 1970’s
USS MINGO SS-261; 52-55, USS VOLADOR SS-490; 59-70
On MINGO, he told me that when she was transferred to the JMSDF, the Japanese Capt said that he was the one that sank YORKTOWN....to MANY Bad looks from the crew of MINGO.
On VALADOR, he was there when she torpedoed herself JUST before the Open House that VALADOR was going to have in S.F.!!
He also told me of some 'Special Ops' going to NorWest Pac.....North of Japan....
