Had it been participating in propulsion experiments?
The Germans started work on hydrogen peroxide propelled subs, but ended up abandoning the idea. Post war allies took possession of the idea, however, and ran their own tests. My first thoughts on this subject then head immediately in that direction.
Only just started to look up this subject...delved into nothing in any detail. Here's the best site that a really quick search produced.

I was reading of a submarine being scrapped postwar suffering an explosion from onboard hydrogen tanks. I was thinking if these were from the scrapping crew for cutting or if hydrogen carried on board for welding?
Primarily a diesel boat question.
Maybe even applicable to surface ships?
