Re: Is this maybe Enterprise and not Hornet?
I think it more likely that is correct, but am not expert enough to be certain. Enterprise seems to have shot a lot of photos similar to this during the Doolittle Raid, and the tail stripes shown in these photos seem to have disappeared right after that. The deck markings for those pics match these. Hornet's deck was filled with B-25's, and even after they launched, her deck markings had been altered for the raid, so were not like this. Could possibly be Yorktown also, but there don't seem to be as many photos like this from her "out there." Odds are then most likely Enterprise to me, but there are plenty of folks here better versed in this sort of thing who can either correct me, or confirm my hunch.
They're distance numbers...how many feet left until the end of the deck. I may be completely wrong about this, but I thought that I read that one side counted down until the end. The other side counted up...how many feet you had rolled.
Know nothing about the red x. Sorry.
Here are two stills of Hornet's center elevator and aft flight deck. It's interesting that the elevator has a red X on it.
Did all of the elevators have this red X at that time? Also, concerning the (yellow?) dashed lines on the sides, are there three digit numbers in-between the dashes? If so, what do the numbers mean?
