Re: Training carrier.
I did a Med. cruise on the USS Independence (CV-62) back in '73. Yes they are big. We only had two sea sparrow launchers and three chaff launchers that I remember.
Your question about the the training carriers brought back a memory. Back in the early 90's before the navy yard closed in Philly. The Forrestal came up the Delaware River to go to the navy yard for overhaul. Anyways her arrival was announced to the Public for viewing. So I drove down to National Park NJ which is across from the navy yard . Back then the navy had a ferry boat that the Navy Yard employees from NJ used to go to work.It had a good sized parking lot and the pier for it was long and covered . I watch the Forrestal arrive and using my binoculars it appeared that the Forrestal as training carrier
was dearmed of 20mm phalanx's and sea sparrow missile launchers .Huge ship. It's only way to describe it.
I was watching the video that Mario (Moe) posted earlier with the F-35 and it got me to thinking. I know there was the USS Lexington (AVT-16) and later the USS Forrestal (AVT-59). Now that both are gone... what carrier does the training for the student pilots? I assume it is whatever is available that is neither busy, deployed, or in refit. Is this correct? Thanks.
