But to expect a delay to 2040 is still something different. There could be still delays in the new program, which cannot have been considered yet, because there is no new program yet. Extrapolating from other Australian naval shipbuilding programs, 2045 is not a very pessimistic assumption. The delay is not simply caused by the new technology, but by the cancelling of an existing program and the necessary time to negotiate and start a new one.
Therefore I had written that the focus of the Australian government is not on the submarines, but on the security pact with the USA. The price for that are the submarines and providing Australian harbors as a base for US SSNs (and UK is a bonus).
