my experience as one who maintained paint storage and issue is that many times depending on available stock Haze gray was sometimes diluted with White paint and sometimes black boot topping by the First Lt. paint locker. This was when budgets were tight and stocks not available. During my earl years (C1962-1970) Skipper would often paint or repaint bad hull sections prior to returning to port. Sometimes at sea! Zumwalt clearly stopped that practice as dangerous to crew and wasteful expense. So often sectionswere slightly diferent color etc.
A big point was when deployed to the Med foreign companies were often hired to repaint sides Navy supplying the paint etc. Gave the sidecleaners a break.
When was modern haze gray introduced into the fleet after the war?
