Glad the damage to you was minimal. Those storms can be life changing.
I was a 12-year-old living in Freeport when it was struck by Hurricane Debra in 1951. It was “only” a Cat 1, but we lost electricity for a couple of days, and the city’s water supply was contaminated. Free typhoid vaccines were offered by the health department and freely accepted.
That area is much better prepared now, but hurricanes are serious business, and there’s been a huge influx of population since then that I can’t fault any news media for getting the word out early and often, even if it seems exaggerated at times. Better safe than sorry.
