Re: donation pricing
This is an interesting and useful question. Over the past 14 years or so I've built 13 models on commission, from 1/350 destroyers to 1/200 battleships, but always for friends and charged them the cost of the kits and materials and about 25 cents an hour because I loved building them. Those days are over for me, but I have a large collection of 1/350 scale models that at some point I will want to donate to a museum; I just don't know where or quite how to approach them (I live in coastal southern California).
They need to be appraised by a professional model builder or group that has experience in valuing models.
In practice, a professional model builder could be almost anybody that has built and sold some models. I say 'some' because a one time sale of a model wouldn't be considered 'professional'.
I have been lucky enough to have two of my models accepted by a museum for a permanent display. I have received a "gift agreement " form from them asking for a "market value of gift" and how was the value determined? I have gone to the IRS pages for this and they are of no use. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so are you will to share it with us?
Thank you in advance for the help.
