Re: HMS Prince of Wales - Unlucky Ship?
Given that it was HMS Prince of Wales who put to sea with the builders aboard and mission-killed Bismarck with a green crew and despite turret teething problems, then chased Bismarck south until running out of fuel, I can't think of any reason, logical or emotive why anyone would consider HMS Prince of Wales an "unlucky ship". Their shooting ended Bismarck's mission on the spot.
With all the talk of the new Flyhawk Hood and books on the loss of the POW and Repulse a few posts down.... got me thinking...
Knowing how superstitious sailors are...I wonder if the RN sailors started to believe privately that HMS Prince of Wales was an unlucky ship - or at least an unlucky ship to sail with...
Sure, she was a brand new ship and she had a relatively uneventful sortie into the Med after the Bismarck action. But, I wonder if after POW and HMS Repulse went down in the South China Sea (although tragic) the HMS Renown sailors breathed a sigh of relief. After all, if you are a Royal Navy battle cruiser being ordered to sail with the Prince of Wales did not guarantee your safe return home. She went through two of them - the mighty HMS Hood beloved HMS Repulse.
I really have never read any accounts of RN sailors or brass believing this, but it's just something that made me say to myself "Hmmmmmmmmmmm....I wonder"....
I welcome those of you more versed on this subject to chime in! I'd love to know your thoughts.
