I second the opinion on Tamiya paints. I have an Iwata AB and use only Tamiya Acrylic paints thinned with their own Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. That combination works best. I've tried everything from distilled water to windshield washer fluid. And, as Dave said, Tamiya is generally miserable for hand-brush painting!
What you thin with depends entirely on the paint you use. The ratio will vary depending on the air pressure, air brush, etc. I strongly suggest you look at the paint mfg recommended thinners and that you learn to work the airbrush and your paint brand before putting any of it on a model. Consider spending a few hours on You Tube on airbrushing.
Once you learn to airbrush you will almost find it revolting to want to brush paint anything.
FYI I have used Model Master, Testors, Tamiya and Vallejo paints. I love how Tamiya sprays, but if you touch up with a brush it doesn't do so well.
