My guess: they weren't designed to handle sudden stops (traps). Wouldn't be the first carrier type to have this problem with "attachments"
The article says the problem is undisclosed. Yes, that aspect is less of an issue with Ford's cats...IF the problem is related to cat shot stress. If it is some other problem not related to cat stresses, Ford having gentler cats doesn't really amount to much. If it's an access issue (a possibility they suggested) gentler cat shots is nice, but the tanks still couldn't be used.
Can't wait to find out what the problem is.
Interesting article. I was under the impression that the new Ford 'railgun' catapults were supposed to be much gentler on airframes than the Nimitz steam cats - wouldn't that make at least that aspect of the CFT's less a problem?
