For what it's worth...the winter of '40 - '41 in Russia was long with a lot of snow. Rivers were still flooded in late spring 1941. Even the scheduled invasion would have had extreme difficulty with flooded and sodden ground conditions. Would have been like the typical spring and fall in Russia...one big muddy mess! Barbarossa was doomed to failure before it started!
what doomed him was Italy invading Greece and needing help, this delayed Barbarossa, meaning winter beat him to Moscow!

Around 03:00 Sunday June 22nd the first flares were fired to move off. For the most part it was in twilight but much lighter further north.
Will the world ever see an assault on such a scale ever launched again? No way. Really sent world history off in a tangent.
80 years ago today Germany launched one of the most momentous and costly wars in human history.
