This short video on the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest includes a few quick pics of Father's unit's M1 240 mm Howitzers of the 269th Field Artillery (Super Heavy) in action.
Extremely rare as the 240 mm M1 was "secret" because of its ability to use proximity-fuse "air burst" shells.
The presenter is not shy about declaring this 5-month tragedy a German victory.
Back to boats and boat with airplanes....
"...Japanese Fleet allowed to fight another day...."
That above, the J fleet "escape," was a distasteful reminder, of THE most wasteful, terrible battle ever fought by the US Army, on the other side of the planet, which began Sept. 11, 1944.
The 5-months, mega-tragic Battle of the Hurtgen Forest.
Yes, the battle really lasted 5 months, the US Army's longest continuous battle. Which ended as either (accurately) a German defensive or American Pyric "victory."
There is an extremely well-done German-made 2020 documentary on this totally unnecessary madness, for which Gen. Courtney Hodges should have been put up against a wall. Thousands of American officers and tens of thousands of soldiers felt thusly.
The Germans were baffled, why the Americans kept throwing so much / wasting so much at an "immovable object." https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=hurtgen+forest+battle&docid=608050339956749436&mid=463B6DE545D131274FB0463B6DE545D131274FB0&view=detail&FORM=VIRE
WHY did Bradley and Eisenhower allow it to continue?
