That above, the J fleet "escape," was a distasteful reminder, of THE most wasteful, terrible battle ever fought by the US Army, on the other side of the planet, which began Sept. 11, 1944.
The 5-months, mega-tragic Battle of the Hurtgen Forest.
Yes, the battle really lasted 5 months, the US Army's longest continuous battle. Which ended as either (accurately) a German defensive or American Pyric "victory."
There is an extremely well-done German-made 2020 documentary on this totally unnecessary madness, for which Gen. Courtney Hodges should have been put up against a wall. Thousands of American officers and tens of thousands of soldiers felt thusly.
The Germans were baffled, why the Americans kept throwing so much / wasting so much at an "immovable object."
WHY did Bradley and Eisenhower allow it to continue?
NO WONDER, The Battle of the Hurtgen Forest is not much written about....
