Rob...you're right, I...
off the ship and transferred to another USNR ship in late 86!! That's what it was.
In any case, I'll check out that link, I have seen it once/twice before and if the info on those images 'says' that it was photo in 87...so be it!
The ONLY part I remember was we had this "sh**mate" that skated his watch at times and I remember ONE Time.....finding him by the 5" gun......WITHIN the 'groove' where the 5" elevates, trying to hide!!! And THAT is a "NO SH**er"
To start with, Gray wasn't decommissioned until 6/29/1991. You may not have had a look right here: https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=uss%20gray%20
As you can see, it features a couple of images taken in 1987 (eventhough it says 'exact date shot unknown). In any case, both images clearly show that Gray did not have the bulwark/extension you're refering to.
I Finally decided ( and told myself that I would do this during the Summer )... that I will work on my Next build.....
1/350 Knox-class frigate...USS GRAY FF-1054....
She was my First ship when I entered the USN and although I was with her crew for about 2.5 years before she was decom...she still was My Favorite Ship!!
So...the 'Major Assistance' the kit is the old Iron Shipwrites kit that has that extension on the forecastle to protect the 5-inch mount but More importantly the ASROC launcher. My Question is....
DID GRAY have that Extension???!!!! Over the Numerous years I try to find out IF GRAY had it in Nov 84 - 86 decomm??!!! Found Ray's D Bean's DVD helpful but no decomm of GRAY...tried the InterNet ...no Joy!!
Does AnyBody KNOW??!!! My memory doesn't go that far, and I have no pics of its forecastle....No Lie....don't 'pull my leg and show a KNOX-class forecastle w or w/o that extension and say it is GRAY when it was WHIPPLE!!!
And I have looked at NavSource.... http://www.navsource.org/archives/06/images/06021054/0602105419.jpg
and it says 'Date unknown'....
