Re: I need Major Assistance.....
Well I did some checking and found that the Gray was transferred to the naval reserve in 1982,she decommissioned in 1991 and was scrapped in 2001.
I don't think she had the improvement to keep the bow dry. Also she wasn't alone in this. 2 sister ships the Donald Beary and the Capodanno also didn't get the bow improvement. HTH
Wow. I never imagined that any of the class escaped those mods on the fo'c'sle, but it sure does look like Gray did. I saw photos of the for-sale models with the bulwarks and strakes, but nothing of real-life photos.
Seems to me that about the only way to absolutely confirm your question is to see a photo of the ship being towed to the salvage yard, and I couldn't find one of that time. Best of luck to you. At least I know that my ship, FF-1065 did have those mods, for that someday when I am ready to build the model.
I Finally decided ( and told myself that I would do this during the Summer )... that I will work on my Next build.....
1/350 Knox-class frigate...USS GRAY FF-1054....
She was my First ship when I entered the USN and although I was with her crew for about 2.5 years before she was decom...she still was My Favorite Ship!!
So...the 'Major Assistance' the kit is the old Iron Shipwrites kit that has that extension on the forecastle to protect the 5-inch mount but More importantly the ASROC launcher. My Question is....
DID GRAY have that Extension???!!!! Over the Numerous years I try to find out IF GRAY had it in Nov 84 - 86 decomm??!!! Found Ray's D Bean's DVD helpful but no decomm of GRAY...tried the InterNet ...no Joy!!
Does AnyBody KNOW??!!! My memory doesn't go that far, and I have no pics of its forecastle....No Lie....don't 'pull my leg and show a KNOX-class forecastle w or w/o that extension and say it is GRAY when it was WHIPPLE!!!
And I have looked at NavSource.... http://www.navsource.org/archives/06/images/06021054/0602105419.jpg
and it says 'Date unknown'....
