1979 pier12 Norva. Ike awaiting first med deployment. Two potheads are smoking a joint in shaft alley are. Roving patrol is heard they throw the joint down an scuttle away. One hour later fire alarms go off, entire stbd side shaft alley involved with heavy smoke. The flames and damage reaches the 3rd deck next to my Q Cosal storeroom. Smoke and heat damage to Q Cosal material. Note: no nuclear ship can deploy without 100% on their Q-Cosal aboard. This happened on a Sunday I was S-1 LCPO had to go to ship along with hundred of others. Our last weekend at home before deployment. Spent 24/7 hours next 4 days restocking Q-Cosal items and as we were leaving Norva Helos were flying last items aboard. Costs to Navy tens of thousands of dollars. Did we find them yes could they pay no. Just a typical example of what one or two careless individuals can do to damage a ship.
Same cruise once we hit the Med a newby reported aboard at Rota. While be escorted around the ship he accidently set off the Hanger deck sprinkler system. Hanger 3 full of Tomcats with electroinc access doors open. Sytem got turned off and Air dept and Squadrons spent hours washing and cleaning electronics that had been sprayed with AFFF.
In both case inport fire parties and at sea fire parties responded quickly to mitigate damage, Agin one person touching or doing something they did not know about or understand!
So now that the BHR is in Texas getting chopped up, any word on the final investigation? I saw a reference to someone being investigated for arson... any further update? Or is it being kept quiet?
