I look back at the ships I was on and remember the 6+ month overhauls that each had -
--The ship's CO was looked upon as a nasty, over-the-top hardcase* when they forbad any newspapers from coming on the ship. The poor yardworkers* couldn't read the sports section or do crosswords during their lunch breaks.
--Trash was required to be picked up constantly. No rest for the duty section.
--Firewatches (usually ship's company) were required to be present on both sides of a bulkhead when any hotwork was performed. No exceptions, and that means some work had to be delayed until the firewatch was found.
--Command Duty Officer was held responsible on weekends when minimal crew was around and no yard work was being done. CDO was expected to keep a close eye on things.
--and on and on...
And our engineering fire suppression systems were disabled during new eqpt installations and major repairs.
I submit another alternative to Bill's list:
Plain ol' sabotage performed by a butthead* moron - along the lines of USS Miami and USS Ranger, among others. Perhaps some clown* had a girlfriend/boyfriend in San Diego and they didn't want to leave the yards?
*Some gentler words substituted to keep it G-rated. Sailors might not have used the exact words I wrote.
So many programs are in place to prevent shipyard accidents and yet, one or more were defeated or ignored, resulting in a fire. A huge fire that has probably kept a LOT of people awake at night since.
1. Arson to cover up theft. So much for security.
2. Arson to cover up espionage. Again so much for security.
3. Saving face for being plain stupid that they disengaged their fire suppression systems and allowed work to continue without a fire watch. The Navy taking its time looking for a scapegoat.
4. The Navy looking for a conceivable set of circumstances to release to the public to explain self spontaneous combustion of a multi-billion dollar warship and blame nobody.
I am leaning to 2 and 3 myself.
So now that the BHR is in Texas getting chopped up, any word on the final investigation? I saw a reference to someone being investigated for arson... any further update? Or is it being kept quiet?
