Correction - the engine was electric, not hydraulic.
The hydraulic engine was under the quarterdeck, in the tiller flat - I'm not sure exactly what the engine looked like. It drove shafts connected to conveyors under the after ends of each mine track, short endless chains, the teeth fitted on which engaged with the sinker of each mine in turn, pulling it aft. As the mines were linked until they dropped off the after end of the rail, all the mines moved aft as each one was laid.
When converted for the minelaying role, the TSDS winches abreast the mainmast were landed, as were the paravanes and associated gear on the quarterdeck, although they retained the ability to deploy paravanes from the foc's'le (as Icarus did during the Second Battle of Narvik).
Where would the winches be placed, and what exactly would they look like?
