Dewey had to make do with what he could acquire locally -coal and paint from local sources. Some references indicate the color was grey-green.
Spanish source described the approaching battle line as a wet moon color.
Having seen a modern haze grey ship appear pink depending on sunlight angle and clarity I expect the grey hues would depend on the viewing position and time of day.
