Thanks for sending those photos! One question, though- It seems as though in a lot of places they painted right over parts of the equipment that were scraped, without sanding or filling the chipped areas. Is that normal? Is there any way to tell if some sort of rust inhibiting primer was applied to the scraped areas before they were painted? I would think that the chips would be less noticeable if a primer was applied first.

Recently, there were no warships to be seen, therefore I checked my older photos. I found photos of the Russian landing ship Kaliningrad of the Project 775 (NATO: Ropucha), when she visited Kiel in 2012:
