Mike, I am very glad to hear this. I know you will do a great job. Micro Master started a 3D of the SLC a couple of years or longer ago. I had talked him into doing it when he was still just doing Shapeways stuff. He posted a partial very nice drawing on his Facebook page maybe two years ago. When he did that I mentioned it here on Steelnavy. Simon (Micro Master) has now moved into his own printing like Model Monkey and this has keep him very busy. I would check in with him every once in a while concerning the SLC. He told me he would not have it printed by Shapeways because of the quality compared to his current prints and printers, but he might consider something else to get it done. I just checked with him a couple of weeks ago and he responded that it was dead and that the 3D drawings he had done were no where near in shape to do anything with without much more work. He said with all the other things he had planned and available he would not be doing anything more with the SLC work.
I have a lot of info including the Profile Morskie of SLC, a nice SLC 1/200 paper model from Poland that I have reduced to 1/700, and a 1941 set of plans for Pensacola in 1/16" = 1'. These plans are of Pensacola after the aft tripod mast was changed and the the bridge wings modified for the 1.1" positions. These came from the man over on Modelwarships that downloaded a large number of plans to a link on the Modelwarships site. I reduced these to 1/700 also. Some of the sheets are not in great shape, but will do. If I can help let me know (email@example.com).
I started on a pattern for both the Pensacola and Salt Lake City (the hulls have minor differences), but then heard of someone doing a 3D one, so I set mine aside.
I have decided to go ahead with at least one of each, as soon as I get two other project out of the way that are near completion.
My intent is to do applicable versions for the Battle of the Kormandorky Islands (CA-25),the Battle of Tassafaronga (CA-24) and then go from there. Any suggestions are welcomed, if they include a diagram or description of AA and radar fit. I have the plans from Warship International, the Profile Morskie book, some photos from the Floating Drydock, and some others that I have collected online. I also plan to comb the CASF thread on MW for information, but if you have any drawings or photos you'd like to contribute, you can send them to mikecap07 (AT) gmail (DOT) com and I'll give your contribution credit in the instructions.
My kit will include etch and I'm hoping to include 3D small parts, if I can find a reliable source.
I have seen both the HP, Classic Warships and its updated Midship version and all are inaccurate or crude (hand scribed deck planks on the HP kit?), so I have also felt that there is a hole needing to be filled.
This is a public statement, so I am committed to it now. I'll post updates as they become available.
