I also have used white glue to position larger pieces (i.e. bridge parts) and then to let it dry where appropriate. Then reinforce in parts with CA glue.

I also will spot tack my railing along the deck with CA glue (held in place also with Tamiya tape so it's straight). After drying I then brush along the bottom where the railing meets the deck with very thin white glue to essentially seal it in place. As white glue is self leveling/gap filling in a smooth manner I can go back and touch up paint the joint to my liking. Kudos to David Griffith for providing this method in his book, "Ship Models from Kits: Basic and Advanced Techniques for Small Scale".
