Re: Thanks for the comments so far
Don't go to PoD. As a buyer it is a deal-breaker to me.
Assuming e.g. A4 landscape format, how many pages it might have? I recently bought a self-published book about a WW2 veteran authored and published by the vet's son. It has 392 pages in roughly A4-sized landscape format, hardcover and offset printed with fewer than 1000 copies printed (I asked the author and while he stated that the precise number is not public info, the run is less than 1000). It was priced at 44 € plus shipping.
I should have added that I have gone through both the publisher and self published book route (on demand). Book publishers aren't like they used to be ten years ago. I take the ideas to publishers. If a publisher picks up on it by the time I am finished, problem solved. If no one takes it, I just say FIDO and do it myself. My last book (not on ships) was through a publisher and sold a couple hundred thousand copies.
Do to the nature of the material, the book needs to have a large format (wider than tall). I have yet to see an on demand printer that does larger than 8 1/2x11.
I have a friend who runs a small publishing house (about 6 books a year—but totally unrelated to ships) who has been helping to line up resources in case a publisher does not step up.
