Re: HMS Gloucester in 1991 (Operation Granby): searching information
The photo is captioned as showing the ships during DESERT STORM; I've no reason to doubt that. A probable clue is the canvas shelter right in the eyes of the ship where a lookout was stationed to watch for free-floating mines. In that photo she is carrying STWS tubes in the usual location, although the mounting has a canvas cover and the muzzle end is hidden by a metal plate to shield the warhead from any splinters or light weaponry.
Light AA includes a Phalanx 20mm CIWS either side of the funnel, a single GAM-B01 20mm gun on 02 Deck each side (visible under the crewman on 03 Deck aft of the for'd radar dome) and a single 20mm Oerlikon in a sponson either side of the after end of the hangar on 01 Deck.
After looking at the wikepeakia ship histories of the middle picture of the USS Fife DD-991,USS Niagara Falls AFS-3,and the HMS Gloucester D-96 looks like it was taken during Desert Storm (1991) or as it was ending.Because all 3 ships were there.I have the
book British Guided missile Destroyers by Osprey.
It covers the Countys,Types 82,42,and 45 destroyers. In it mentions that the torpedo tubes were removed in mid 1990's . The type 42's were updated in their role for AA defense. That's all I have HTH .
Footnote Do you live near a county public library they might have Janes Fighting Ships and if so they may have the years your looking for.
I am searching for information to built HMS Gloucester as in 1991 (Operation Granby, Second Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm for the US).
I found only few photos, e.g. in
Strike from the Sea by Iain Ballantyne
Sea Power. Desert Storm Special by Peter Gilchrist (appears to contain mainly photos taken before the war)
My main questions are:
did Gloucester had torpedo tubes when deployed to the Gulf?
what kind of lighter guns did she had?
any special markings? Union Jack on the bridge and also rear of the Phalanx?
Here is a photo with USS Fife (DD-991) in the background - was that made in 1991? Fife was part of Desert Storm.
